EncroChat vs. Other Encrypted Networks: Why It Stood Out

EncroChat was not the only encrypted communication service in existence, but it became one of the most notorious. Its downfall drew comparisons with other secure messaging platforms such as Sky ECC, Anom, and Phantom Secure. Each of these services catered to users who valued privacy, but what made EncroChat stand out was how it positioned itself, the scale of its adoption, and the extent to which it was embraced by organized crime networks. Unlike standard messaging apps like Signal or WhatsApp, EncroChat operated on custom-modified phones. These devices were stripped of typical smartphone functions, such as cameras, GPS, and app stores, to minimize the risk of surveillance. They came with a dual operating system: one for encrypted use and another “decoy” system to mimic a normal phone if inspected by authorities. Features such as self-destructing messages and the infamous “panic wipe” function made the devices appear far more advanced and crime-friendly than mainstream encrypted apps.

Sky ECC was another major encrypted phone provider and, for a time, a direct competitor to EncroChat. Like EncroChat, it marketed its devices as ultra-secure, but it faced a similar fate when police managed to infiltrate its system. Meanwhile, Anom was different—it was actually a law-enforcement sting operation disguised as an encrypted service. Criminals adopted it widely, believing it was safe, only to later discover that authorities were monitoring every message. Phantom Secure, based in Canada, also catered to criminal groups until it was dismantled, but it never achieved the same global notoriety as EncroChat.

What truly set EncroChat apart was its scale and reputation. At its peak, it had more than 60,000 active users worldwide, with a large concentration in Europe. Many of these users were directly tied to organized crime, using the platform to traffic drugs, coordinate weapons deals, and launder money. The volume of illicit communication uncovered during the police infiltration was unmatched, making EncroChat the centerpiece of one of the largest criminal investigations in modern history.

EncroChat also became symbolic of the tension between privacy and law enforcement. While other services like Signal or Telegram are widely used by ordinary people as well as activists, EncroChat was overwhelmingly linked to criminal activity, which ultimately justified the extraordinary measures taken to dismantle it. Its takedown, and the subsequent collapse of Sky ECC and exposure of Anom, sent a clear message: no encrypted platform is entirely beyond the reach of determined investigators.

The legacy of EncroChat lies not just in its technology, but in how it shaped the broader conversation about encrypted communications. It stood out because it pushed the limits of privacy technology while simultaneously exposing how such tools could become indispensable to the criminal underworld.
