Reaching New Heights – My Mera Peak Climbing Experience
A firsthand story of climbing Mera Peak – the challenges, the beauty, and why it’s one of the best adventures for beginners in Nepal.

When I first heard about Mera Peak, I was just curious. I had done some high-altitude treks, but never a real peak climb. At 6,476 meters, Mera Peak is the highest trekking peak in Nepal. That sounded exciting and a bit scary at the same time. But something about it pulled me in.

The journey started in Lukla, like most treks in the Everest region. From there, instead of heading straight to Everest Base Camp, we took a quieter, more peaceful route towards Mera. The trails were less crowded, and the villages felt untouched. We passed through forests, crossed rivers, and walked on paths where I barely saw any other trekkers. It felt raw and real.

What I loved most was the gradual pace. It helped us acclimatize properly. We stayed in teahouses, met local people, and enjoyed simple meals like dal bhat and momos. The altitude was slowly kicking in, and I could feel my body getting tired faster. But every step felt worth it. I was getting closer to the mountain I had dreamed of.

The real climb started after Khare. That is where the training began too. We practiced using crampons, harnesses, and ropes. For someone with no mountaineering background, it was super helpful. The guide was patient and made sure we understood everything. The gear felt heavy at first, but I got used to it.

The climb from the Mera High Camp was the hardest part. We started before midnight, walking slowly under the moonlight. It was cold freezing, in fact. Every breath was hard. Every step took effort. But the silence on that icy trail was something I’ll never forget. The only sounds were our boots crunching on snow and the occasional deep breath.

As the sky started to lighten, I looked around and saw the most unreal view. Big peaks everywhere Everest, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Lhotse. It felt like they were watching over us. The sun painted the snow orange and pink. That moment gave me so much energy, even though I was exhausted.

Reaching the summit of Mera Peak was emotional. I had no words. I just stood there, eyes full, heart full. I had pushed myself in ways I didn’t know I could. It wasn’t just about the mountain it was about proving something to myself. That I could do hard things. That I could keep going when it got tough.

Coming down was quicker but still needed focus. You can’t let your guard down on ice. Once back in Khare, we celebrated with hot tea and chocolate. The feeling of safety mixed with pride was amazing.

Looking back, Mera Peak Climbing was more than just a trip. It was a personal journey. It showed me the strength of the human body and mind. It also reminded me of how small we are in front of nature and how beautiful that feeling can be.

If you have done trekking and want to go one step higher, Mera is a great choice. It’s not easy, but it’s not extreme either. With good guidance, preparation, and determination, anyone with decent fitness can do it. And trust me, standing on that summit is something that will stay with you forever.
